The Metropolitan Region Rhine-Neckar (the Rhine-Neckar-Triangle) belongs to the most important industrial locations in Germany. 10 of the 100 largest German enterprises, among them e.g. BASF and SAP, have their domiciles here.
The Region also has its flagships in science and research (Biotechnology and Life Sciences). The oldest university in Germany (Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg) is resident in the Metropolitan Region. Twelve Nobel Prize winners point to the long tradition of excellent research work. This research work is nowadays continued in 22 universities and many non-university facilities. The inhabitants of the Metropolitan Region, which encloses parts of the states Baden-Wuerttemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, share this living space with a high quality of living in the seventh largest agglomeration in Germany. Here they find everything that makes life interesting and worthwhile: local recreation areas, cultural highlights and first-class sports performances.
On 26. July 2005 the prime ministers of the three afore-mentioned states signed the new treaty for the Metropolitan Region Rhine-Neckar. The responsibilities of the regional participants were extended by means of this treaty and regional planning and development were standardized.
