Repayment of the grants for students according to the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz

If you have received Grants for Students according to the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG) for the duration of your studies, then you are obliged to pay back the share which you have received as a loan.

The repayment of the loan starts five years after the end of the maximum period of the BAföG grant (therefore this does not have to be five years after the end of your studies). The Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA) will contact you in this regard around six months before start of repayment.

Please note that in this regard you are obliged to Notify a change in address or name to the BVA.

If you do not report changes and the Federal Office of Administration has to find out your address, you will have to pay EUR 25 for this.

You must pay back the BAföG loan within 20 years with a minimum monthly instalment fixed by law. The Federal Office of Administration takes into account any additional exemption periods of no more than 10 years.

Payment dates are set for the repayment instalments. Interest may be incurred if you exceed these dates by more than 45 days. This interest may be 6 percent per year for the entire residual loan debt.

Upper limit

If you started your training after 28 February 2001, you do not need to pay back any more than EUR 10,000. This applies regardless of how much loan you have received.

Responsible authority

the Federal Office of Administration (Bundesverwaltungsamt)
The BVA’s duty is to manage and draw in loans in accordance with the BAföG.

Prerequisite

You have received training support as stipulated in the Federal Training Assistance Act.

Procedure

The Bundesverwaltungsamt receives data from the student unions regarding the loans issued so as to process the repayment. Approximately four and a half years after the maximum duration of the grant for your first subsidised educational phase has expired, you will receive the following by post

  • an assessment in which the amount of the loan debt and the maximum period of the grant is determined and
  • a repayment confirmation, which specifies the date of repayment and the amount of the instalments.

You normally pay the monthly instalments of EUR 105 specified in the notification by a direct debit mandate. The payment is generally made in quarterly instalments of EUR 315 at the end of each quarter.

You may grant authorisation for the direct debit mandate online at the Federal Office of Administration (Bundesverwaltungsamt). You may also transfer the instalments by standing order.

Note: You have been able to complete your training exceptionally well or particularly quickly. Then you can apply to be exempted from part of the loan under certain conditions. These partial exemptions related to your performance or period of study only apply to training completed by 31 December 2012.

If your financial situation makes it difficult for you to make the repayments on time, you can make an application not to have to pay back the loan under certain conditions.

If you pay back the BAföG completely or partially ahead of schedule, then you will be given a discount. For this you can agree to the offer described in the repayment confirmation by applying for premature repayment. A premature repayment of loan amounts that are not yet due is also possible at a later date.

Deadlines/Duration

The loan has to be repaid within 20 years (taking eventual additional release periods of maximum 10 years into account) with a legally specified minimum monthly instalment.
