Applying for a printout from the Commercial Register (Handelsregister)

The Commercial Register provides information about corporations (GmbH, AG), commercial partnerships (OHG, KG) and sole traders. It also contains facts and information about legal relationships that are important when doing business. The Commercial Register includes for example the names of persons who are authorised to represent the registered company.
The Commercial Register is an official directory that is kept in electronic form. The register court will issue a printout of the entries and documents submitted at your request.

Responsible authority

The register court in whose registration district the company or sole trader is domiciled.

Note: The register courts in Baden-Württemberg are the district courts in Freiburg, Mannheim, Stuttgart and Ulm.

Procedure

You can apply for a printout either in person or in writing.

  • If you ask the competent authority in person, you will receive a printout immediately.
  • If you send a written request, you will receive an invoice. The authority will send you the printout no later that the date on which the invoice amount is credited to their account.

They will also send the information to you in electronic form. This will be an official file, similar to a certified copy. If you only want a simple printout, you must expressly request this.

Miscellaneous

If you only require the information itself rather than as a file or a printout, you can access the Common register portal of the German federal states from your computer.

All the companies registered in Germany can be found using a search function. You can find a company just by entering part of its name.

The content of the register is presented in various forms as a PDF document and can be saved or printed. However, you have to register for this and you may incur fees.

Costs/Benefits

  • for simple excerpts: EUR 10.00
  • for official excerpts: EUR 20.00

If sent electronically:

  • for an uncertified file: EUR 5.00
  • for a certified file: EUR 10.00
